Just as the transition to renewables is finally speeding up, the internet risks holding us back to dirty energy sources and embedding a new age of dependency on fossil fuels. AI compute resources, cloud computing and other digital technologies can help us accelerate climate action, or they can lock in decades of new dependency on fossil fuels.

How we are working towards a Fossil Free Internet

In 2025 we published a new Fossil Free Products standard with the European Committee for Standardization, including a section on Digital Products. Through this, we are pushing for developers of apps and websites to have their products certified fossil free. We expect this certification to bring significant added value to products that display it and to help get the internet off of fossil fuels within years, not decades.
